Windows Media Player 10 can be configured to automatically rip CDs (copy the contents to your hard drive using a compression format) whenever they are inserted into your computer's CD-ROM drive. Plus, to make things even easier, Media Player can also eject CDs as soon as the ripping is complete, allowing you to more quickly convert your music collection to digital.

During the Windows Media Player 10 upgrade, a "Customize the Installation Options" dialog will appear. When it does, click the "File Types" tab and uncheck "MP3 audio files" to keep Winamp playing these files. You may want to uncheck other file types, as desired, if you already have preferred multimedia players for said file types.

Security experts have intercepted two malicious Trojans hidden in video files that download and install spyware, diallers and computer viruses when played in Microsoft Windows Media player. These Trojans take advantage of technology incorporated in Microsoft Windows Media player called Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM), designed to protect the intellectual property rights of multimedia content.

Currently there is no way to keep Windows Media Player from automatically attempting to connect to the Internet when you try to play specially crafted Windows Media files. The updates to Media Player 9 and 10, expected within a month, will allow users to prevent such Internet access when media files are played.

When a user tries to play a protected Windows media file, this technology demands a valid licence. If the license is not stored on the computer, the application will look for it on the internet, so that the user can acquire it directly or buy it. This technology is incorporated through the Windows XP Service Pack 2 + Windows Media Player 10 update.
