With millions of devices able to receive audio content automatically through Windows Media Player. (Pocket PC, Rio Karma, Creative MuVo, Creative Zen PMC and Dell DJ are just the devices I own that fit this description), it's only a matter of time before we see an iPodder client with software media player independence. In the meantime, using the autoplaylist feature of Windows Media Player 10, combined with Auto-synchronization is an easy hack for streamlining the process. In fact, this hack is more fully automatic than the Windows/iTunes/iPod solution.

Foobar2000 is an advanced media player for the Windows platform. Some of the basic features of the media player include Replay Gain support, a low-memory footprint, and native support for several popular audio formats. Features include open-component architecture, allowing third-party developers to extend functionality of the player; built-in support for WAV, AIFF, VOC, AU, SND, Ogg Vorbis, MPC, MP2, MP3, MPEG-4 AAC, FLAC, OggFLAC, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, Speex, CDDA, TFMX, and SPC; support through third-party plug-ins.

Windows Media Player CD supports burning from within the player, and you can also burn Windows Media Audio and MP3 files. The program supports music subscription services Napster, MusicMatch, Music Now, and Wal-Mart Music, so you can seamlessly buy music online.

Windows Media Player 10 can be configured to automatically rip CDs (copy the contents to your hard drive using a compression format) whenever they are inserted into your computer's CD-ROM drive. Plus, to make things even easier, Media Player can also eject CDs as soon as the ripping is complete, allowing you to more quickly convert your music collection to digital.

Currently there is no way to keep Windows Media Player from automatically attempting to connect to the Internet when you try to play specially crafted Windows Media files. The updates to Media Player 9 and 10, expected within a month, will allow users to prevent such Internet access when media files are played.

Very simple to set up and use, the media player connects to your TV without interfering with your video/DVD player hookup. Easy to install software automatically finds all the media files on any networked PCs into one complete database so you don't have to do the work. The convenient remote control lets you select what to watch or listen to without even getting out of your chair.

During the Windows Media Player 10 upgrade, a "Customize the Installation Options" dialog will appear. When it does, click the "File Types" tab and uncheck "MP3 audio files" to keep Winamp playing these files. You may want to uncheck other file types, as desired, if you already have preferred multimedia players for said file types.
